MPO 527 Professional Ethics in Psychology

This graduate level course focuses on the ethical standards of professional psychology. Students will learn to understand and apply the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychology and Code of Conduct (2002) to the general practice of clinical psychology in civilian and military settings. Ethical issues and dilemmas related to confidentiality, competence, dual relationships, privilege, duty to warn, and expert testimony (among others) will be presented. This course will introduce students to the ethical standards of the profession, teach ethical decision making skills, and foster an appreciation of the complexities of the ethical and legal issues that relate to the practice of psychology. The objectives are: 1. Students will acquire a thorough knowledge of the APA’s Ethical Principles and Standards; 2) Students will learn to recognize common ethical dilemmas and to apply this knowledge in general clinical psychology practice; 3) Students will learn to apply ethical decision making in civilian and military contexts.
