MPO 549 Affective Basis of Behavior

Affective Bases of Behavior is an 8-week course is designed to expose students to both the classic and recent theories and empirical research in affective science. Students are expected to develop an appreciation for the interdisciplinary foundation in the affective sciences. This includes identifying key theoretical positions, engaging in critical discussion, and applying concepts and theories in a topic area. Classes will be conducted in a discussion-based seminar format, in which students will discuss and critique the theories and concepts covered in the assigned readings. Some of the sessions will be more lecture-based and others more discussion based. This is a 2-credit course and partially fulfills the American Psychological Association Affective Bases of Behavior requirement for accreditation. By the end of the course attendees will be able to: 1) To understand classic and recent theories and empirical research in affective science; 2) To develop an appreciation for interdisciplinary approaches to the affective sciences; 3) To apply concepts and theories of affective science to a chosen topic area in psychology; 4) To recognize the conceptual framework for current and past approaches to emotion.
