NURS 8834 Mixed Methods Research

This advanced elective methods course will address the theory and practice of mixing quantitative and qualitative approaches within a single study to address complex research questions in nursing and health care. Students will examine the nature of mixing methods, various conceptualizations of mixed methods design and analysis, and challenges of mixed methods research. Paradigmatic challenges inherent to merging methods and practical strategies for successful implementation will be discussed. The hands-on nature of this course emphasis on practice will feature critiques of empirical mixed method studies from nursing and other disciplines. The student will incorporate prior assignments completed in quantitative and qualitative methods classes combined with concepts integrated from directed course readings to devise a mixed method proposal aligned with the student’s research interests.
