HPE 614 Principles of Simulation-Based Learning in HPE

This course will deepen your understanding of how simulations support learning and how they differ from other learning contexts. We will scrutinize oversimplified notions of learning in simulated contexts, such as "all the learning happens in the debrief" or how simulation simply enables "hands-on learning" or "repetitive practice." We will explore some theoretical and epistemological foundations of learning in simulated contexts. We will also examine practical topics such as the timing and frequency of simulation and pedagogical practices (e.g., scaffolding arrangements and strategies, learning through observation). This course will allow students to examine their beliefs and understandings of employing simulation-based learning activities to help them advance simulation efforts at their home institutions.
