This course focuses on the development and current use of orthodontic fixed appliance techniques. The main emphasis of this course will be a study of current straight-wire-treatment philosophies and appliance manipulation. The text, Systemized Orthodontic Treatment Techniques, by McLaughlin, Bennet and Trevisi, will be used as a guide for studying straight-wire mechanics, utilizing sliding mechanics and light forces. The McLaughlin Techniques of treatment will be compared and contrasted with other currently accepted fixed-appliance systems and techniques, including Andrews, Roth, Tweed, and Begg. This course will provide the resident with a thorough understanding of the components that contribute to a straight-wire-appliance system, and the interaction and manipulation of these components that are necessary to accomplish specific orthodontic treatment goals.
