NURS 7225 Military Behavioral Health for Advanced Practice Nurse

This course builds on the PMH didactic courses providing the student with knowledge and skills to practice in all behavioral/mental health (BH) environments throughout military healthcare. This course covers: 1) administrative behavioral health issues within the military environment; 2) operational / deployment-related readiness concerns; 3) provides an overview of the military health system and service-specific behavioral/mental health policy, related to the readiness of all service members; and 4) the utilization and application of Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC) principles. This course will include extensive Interprofessional Education opportunities with School of Medicine (SOM) and Medical and Clinical Psychology (MPS) programs for a combined effort to create “Behavioral Health at Bushmaster”. Operationalizing the behavioral health mission for the nursing and psychology students at the Bushmaster (field) Practicum. Students cover as many of the nine functional areas of Combat and Operational Stress as possible within the Bushmaster Practicum experience. More specifically, using the landscape of Bushmaster, the students will participate in the practicum focused on BH consultation/education; BH triage/stabilization; BH treatment, restoration, reconditioning, reconstitution; traumatic event management using Psych First Aid (PFA), and conducted a BH Unit Needs Assessment (BHUNA) of the student platoons.
