PSY 4520 Telepsychiatry Elective

Students will participate in outpatient psychiatry visits conducted via video-teleconferencing and telephone to learn skills in evaluating and planning treatment for patients located at remote sites. Students will work under the supervision of resident and staff psychiatrists. This rotation allows one student/rotation, with some rotations and some sites not being available.

This course can only be taken AFTER completion of the Psychiatry Clerkship (PSY 3200)

Learning Objectives

  1. Develop and practice skills specific to telehealth encounters including working with technology, ensuring patient privacy, developing rapport over technology, and obtaining a patient’s history using video teleconferencing or phone technology.
  2. Conduct treatment planning and informed consent discussions using video teleconferencing or phone technology and demonstrate ability to problem-solve with patients how to implement these plans.
  3. Identify patients for whom an in-person evaluation is needed and demonstrate ability to appropriately escalate care to the required level.
