MLTS 1314 Clinical Bacteriology II
This course provides an in-depth study of clinically significant Gram-negative bacteria associated with human infectious diseases. Students investigate the taxonomy, cellular morphology, virulence factors, and diagnostic characteristics of fastidious Gram-negative coccobacilli, Legionella, Bordetella, the family Enterobacteriaceae, and non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli. Emphasis is placed on isolating pathogens from clinical specimens and distinguishing between normal flora, opportunistic pathogens, and primary pathogens. Laboratory instruction focuses on differential staining, selective and differential media selection, biochemical characterization, and performing identification testing for routine and fastidious Gram-negative organisms.
