MLTS 1315 Clinical Bacteriology III
This course examines specialized and fastidious bacterial groups that require unique collection, isolation, and identification techniques. Students explore the taxonomy, physiology, pathogenicity, and laboratory identification of obligate and facultative anaerobic bacteria, spirochetes, obligate intracellular organisms, cell-wall deficient bacteria, and Mycobacterium species. Emphasis is placed on biosafety measures, specialized culture conditions, differential staining (e.g., acid-fast stains), molecular testing, and serological methods used to identify complex pathogens involved in systemic, respiratory, and chronic infectious diseases.
