SUR 4430 Cardiothoracic Surgery Sub-Internship

The purpose of this sub-internship rotation is to provide an immersive experience in with the practice of cardiothoracic surgery in both the inpatient and outpatient environment. Students will be expected to demonstrate a detailed understanding of the evaluation, medical, and surgical management of common and complex problems in the practice of cardiac and thoracic surgery. Sub-interns will be expected to participate in the care of their patients at the intern level, including a requirement for call at the frequency of the most junior resident on the service. The goal of this course is to prepare students interested in both general surgery and primary care with the opportunity to experience the specialty in preparation for internship and residency. The goal of this rotation is to provide an orientation to the practice of cardiothoracic surgery in both the outpatient and inpatient environment. Students will be expected to develop an understanding of the evaluation, medical, and surgical management of common problems in the practice of cardiac and thoracic surgery.

 

Cardiothoracic surgeons provide a multidisciplinary approach to the care of cardiothoracic surgical disease, including state-of-the-art cardiac and thoracic procedures including: coronary artery bypass; valve surgery, including complex valve repair, minimally invasive techniques, and trans-catheter aortic valve replacement, structural heart; aortic aneurysm repair; cardiac arrhythmia surgery; minimally invasive lung resection; and treatment of both benign and malignant conditions of the lungs and chest. The team consists of dedicated intensive care and operating room nurses who specialize in the care of cardiothoracic surgical patients, experienced operating room personnel and perfusionists utilizing the most advanced equipment and techniques, and cardiothoracic anesthesiologists who provide the full spectrum of anesthesia care, including intraoperative echocardiographic monitoring and the latest advances in pain management after surgery.
