The purpose of this elective rotation is to provide experience with the practice of trauma surgery. Rotating students will participate as members of a Trauma Team, with exposure to initial evaluation and resuscitation, and a wide perspective of trauma care/systems; from epidemiology of injury, to life-saving procedures. Students will be expected to demonstrate a detailed understanding of the evaluation, medical, and surgical management of critically injured patients, including trauma-bay evaluation, operative intervention, and inpatient management both in the intensive care unit and on the wards. The goal of this course is to prepare students interested in either surgery or primary care with the opportunity to experience the specialty in preparation for internship and residency.
