MLTS 1511 Transfusion Services and Therapy
This course provides a comprehensive overview of clinical transfusion services, donor center operations, and immunohematologic diseases. Students examine pre-transfusion testing protocols, component therapy selection, and record-keeping standards required for patient safety. Core units cover regulatory requirements for blood donor selection, phlebotomy, unit processing, and component preparation and distribution. Additionally, students investigate the pathophysiology and laboratory findings of transfusion-transmitted infections, Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn (HDFN), and autoimmune hemolytic anemias (AIHA). Hands-on laboratory components emphasize routine compatibility testing, donor screening simulations, and donor collection techniques using training aids.
